Tattoo Aftercare: How to Heal Your New Tattoo
Aftercare can vary slightly with the location, size and healing method of your tattoo, but this is the standard care the shop gives every client. Questions: call (561) 615-9444 or reach out to your artist directly.
The rules for every tattoo
- Avoid pools, hot tubs, beaches, suntanning and water exposure for a minimum of 2 weeks.
- Do not pick, scratch or peel your new tattoo. If a scab forms, let it fall off naturally.
- Do not touch your tattoo with dirty hands, and do not let anyone else touch it.
- Wear clean, loose clothing around the tattooed area to limit friction.
- Do not keep your tattoo covered in cellophane or cling wrap.
Healing with traditional aftercare
- Remove the wrap or bandage after 1 to 4 hours at home, and wash your hands with antibacterial soap.
- Wash the tattoo gently with warm water and fragrance free antibacterial soap, 3 times daily, with your hands only. No scrub brushes or washcloths, and no bar soap.
- Pat dry with a paper towel and air dry for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Apply a thin layer of antibacterial ointment twice daily for 3 days. Do not over-apply.
- After day three, switch to a small amount of fragrance free light lotion, and keep washing gently for at least two weeks, until the tattoo feels smooth.
Healing with transparent medical film
If your artist applied a transparent medical film dressing, leave it on for at least 24 hours and up to 3 to 5 days, as your artist instructed. The film is water resistant, not waterproof, so shower carefully and hand wash around it. Remove it slowly in the shower, peel in the direction of hair growth, then wash gently with fragrance free liquid antibacterial soap using only your hands.
Once healed, keep lotion on your tattoos and wear sunscreen to keep them looking new.
